Video of the Day!

How about some “whoooooaaaaAAAAA” moments of racing? Here are two little Abarth 500s (as used in the single-make race, in the UK) having a go at it. Until the drive in the leading car has a… bit of a moment. Nothing like some two-wheeled action to make the day a bit brighter.

Another week; another three-member episode. We’ve even found a new studio in amongst some very old cars and a lot of car parts. If that does not get with the spirit of the show then we don’t know what more to do.  The only flaw is Trevor Tuck and Patrick Gearing are so distracted by the parts and machinery they are in their own version of an Alfa red-light district.

This week the team of the Trevors and Patrick discuss (apart from the hotness of the chilli on the pizza) a number of interesting automotive news stories and even deliver a car review on the FIAT 500 MTA with a gearbox Tuck loves to hate.

In this week’s  show the news is abuzz with info on the a design award for the BMW 5-Series. What the press fail to mention is that the 5er won the silver with the top honours going to Mercedes Benz for its SLS. All credit to BMW for dominating the news though – that’s good PR.

Also, SAGMJ announces its finalist list for the South African Car of the Year 2011 which is a little ho-hum at best – click the link to see all the cars considered for this year and the finalists that actually made it through. Lastly, the team wraps up with a review of the FIAT 500 MTA. A Selespeed that Tuck feels has not really got any better than the first versions and leaves the model a little deflated. Listen to the full review to make up your mind.

Three’s a company – and its also this week’s team, sans Christo. He’s off in Zimbabwe to take photographs completely unrelated to motoring. That leaves ZA Car Show in the hands of Patrick Gearing, Trevor van de Ven and Trevor Tuck. Whether that is a good thing or not is a question yet to be answered; what we can tell you is that its s short show, so go ahead download it and see if you can make your journey to work in a single listen.

It’s all about bakkies and Trevor van de Ven getting it horribly wrong about the Audi RS5 (its a V8, not a turbo V6 you idiot), but we burnt his hand with a cigarette when we discovered that faux pas. He shamed us and we apologise.

Is the performance car dead? We wave goodbye to the iconic Civic Type R because its 2-litre four-pot puts out too many carbons. It seems rather ridiculous, but coming from a manufacturer that has positioned itself as the leading ‘green’ auto supplier, it was bound to happen.

That said, some people throw caution to the wind and flip the bird to such trivial regulations. Some people are like successful businessman Michael Stoschek, and his son Maximilian, who commissioned the Lancia Stratos from Pininfarina. The new Stratos is based on the guts of a Ferrari F430 while the bodywork is crafted completely from carbon fiber providing an awesome power to weight ratio and weight distribution.

Despite how much it sounds like a TV actress, the Morgan EvaGT is a four seater from British sportscar builder, Morgan. It uses a turbo inline V6 from BMW and has some pretty healthy credentials to help it reach 100km/h in 4.5 seconds. It’s still a plasticine model, but will likely be in the coming year and it will be very, very expensive.

Criticised for looking too old, now it looks too modern. Will Morgan ever get it right?

Did Audi go X-R8[ed] with its new Spyder? In SA we only get the V10, which is probably better.  Does it look as good as its hard-topped brother?

We'll take it, even in this chocolate-box brown.

Launch Drive: Christo van Gemert joined a bunch of other journalists who go on car launches, drink lots of alcohol and eat for a living to experience the Honda CRZ – a new hybrid from Honda and the first in the first for the brand in SA. Is is a R300 000 car?

ZACS Test: FIAT 500C. A write-up on this magnificent little convertible coming soon.

ZA Car Show: Episode 86

It’s been a busy week, which is unusual of late. From the Mercedes CLS-like Audis to sexy hybrid Porches, but nothing confuses us more than MINI‘s decision to re-enter the WRC with a Cooper Countryman. On the local front it’s hypercars, super-saloons, repmobiles and… er Mercedes CSL-like Volkswagens.  Listen to the podcast to get all the insight and arguments that you will never get from a magazine.

Classically Italian, far better looking than its German and Korean counterparts
