About
ZA Car Show is a weekly motoring podcast hosted by leading South African motoring journalists. Presented by Christo van Gemert, Trevor van de Ven, Patrick Gearing and Trevor Tuck, ZA Car Show delivers the latest news from the local and international motoring industries in a fun, informative and conversational manner.
The ZA Car Show Team members are as follows:
Christo van Gemert
Christo van Gemert started life out as a little boy on the East Rand, so it only makes sense that big, be-winged turbo monsters became a part of his daily life. Being from the far East of Johannesburg, South Africa in a little town famous for Charlize Theron, his obsession with cars took a turn for the better when he started tuning Skylines and Imprezas… but this foray into the world of Gran Turismo on his Playstation was just a teaser of what was to come. Christo started writing for magazines in 2002, and eventually got an opportunity to test cars in 2006, which he has been doing ever since. He brings to ZA Car Show a wealth of figures and stats, along with a taste for well-balanced performance cars and fun-to-drive city cars.
Trevor van de Ven
Trevor van de Ven, like Christo van Gemert also grew up on the Eastern side of Johannesburg, South Africa – something that should become immediately apparent with surnames beginning with ‘van’. Trevor currently holds a position in the media communications field, but despite owning a couple of less-than-noteworthy cars, still cannot shake his obsession for all things car-like. This obsession was kindled early in his childhood with Sunday walks through the used car dealers in Boksburg and fueled when Trevor got into journalism in 2003 and realised that even poorly paid journalists can drive nice cars. These days, Trevor is a family man with an eye on fuel economy and practicality of vehicles – he is perhaps the only part of the ZACS crew that tries to conserve petrol rather than waste it and gets excited about things like grocery-bag hooks in the boot.
Trevor Tuck
The Tuck hails from bright and sunny Cape Town where, as a young boy, it was clear that his fetish for dolls and wheels would sculpt his future. His dad, having noticed hormonal changes in him at a very young age, decided to build him a kart from old wheel barrow scraps. The Tuck took to four wheels like a Tuck to water and eventually relegated the toy dolls to his pink toy box. The Tuck moved to Johannesburg in 1998 to continue his passion for four wheels and, true as nuts, ran into a few dolls along the way. His role as tame racing driver for ZA Car Show meant The Tuck had to undergo vigorous four wheel training, in the process winning local and national production car and historic racing championships in the process. The Tuck remains active in motorsport and, despite having to run a business, still finds time to race competitively and still play with dolls. Not being the sharpest tool of the quartet, The Tuck is reserved for opinion on minivans and multi-purpose vehicles for ZA Car Show. Being oldest of all, however, he is also the grand master of motoring general knowledge – well just under Patrick Gearing that is….
Patrick Gearing
Shame, Patrick’s colleagues had to grow up under demanding circumstances. He, however, had the privilege of a JHB northern suburbs upbringing, surrounded by a collection of exotic and not-so-exotic cars owned by his father. The bug was contagious, and Gearing’s garage is a collection of mostly incomplete, but nevertheless interesting pieces of automobilia he hopes to be able to drive one day. As an award winning motoring journalist for ten years, Patrick made a living travelling the world on motor manufacturers’ budgets and driving their cars. Gearbox, as he affectionately known by his wife and close colleagues, executed a perfect double lane change and now consults to those very same car brands. His insight into the car industry is what earned him a spot on ZA Car Show – well, actually, he doesn’t know much else other than cars. He quietly considers himself the sage of common sense on ZACS, admires Trevor van de Ven’s enthusiasm for his convictions, allows Christo to quote the incorrect figures, and reckons he could stay ahead of The Tuck in a race car – well, actually he’s proven that last point!
