New Car Launch Drive: MINI JCW, BMW’s new pocket rocket, not be confused with the MINI Cooper JCW kit, all very confusing we know

In Episode 7 of ZA Car Show, we discuss a couple of motoring topics without Christo at the helm of the computer. Instead the three remaining commentators, Patrick Gearing and Trevor’s Squared managed to cover the following topics:

  • VW pulls the plug on Seat SA (clicky on the blue part to read the official letter)
  • BMW announces the Brilliance Splendor, not really, actually a BMW 3-Series facelift – BMW jealous of Audi’s daytime running lights
  • Audi SA alludes to the Audi A3 convertible – ZACS guesses prices and get it right
  • Rumor mill: BMW X2
  • Rumor mill: MINI Clubman Crossover
  • Nissan spruces up the Livina range with the X-Gear, nice looking car at a nice price
  • ZA Car Show launches its sales training course. In a market where car sales are lagging, we dispense free advice on how to sell cars. Next time we expect payment. Get a hold of us on email for further training courses.

In Episode Six, we have no special guests. It’s just the regular opinionated crew of Christo, Patrick and the Trevors up to their usual opinionated selves. In this episode we discuss a lot of local news and new car announcements while also playing the second instalment of “Pick the best car from brand X” yielding, once again, surprising results…

We also discuss:

  • What was the car Tuck was talking about in Episode Five – the first production car designed in a wind tunnel? Designed in 1963 this thing has the same drag coefficient as a Porsche 911. You’ll never believe us but find the answer here
  • Cheap cars again, this time a Renault hash up of TATA and Dacia, what a combo
  • Christo likes to put Trevor van de Ven on the spot, this time ZACS picks a bone with the new BMW 520d – is +R400 000 good value?
  • We talk Porsche’s move to four cylinder and the Mercedes-Benz DiesOtto
  • South Africa and emissions laws…
  • And even more ridiculous legislation on left hand drive cars
  • The Volvo C30 1.6, overpriced cold hatch, or alternative to the Golf V, Christo waits for them to depreciate while we all get sidetracked again, this time fixated on another 90’s classic the Volvo 850R
  • The Caddy-shack CTS, launched in South Africa is this a serious competitor to the BMW 5-Series, and Merc E-Class
  • Mazda introduces stop/start technology in Europe. The new wave of fuel efficient engines do they work some agree some don’t
  • We play the second instalment of our “Pick the best car from brand X” This week listen and be surprised. A debate ensues.

The regular crew of Christo, Patrick and the Trevors squared are back to talk about Renault and Mercedes-Benz mostly. In this show we explore everything from the best Merc to the Smart brand.

We also have a look at:

  • The Twingo RenaultSport – a silly name for a great car, apparently. It’s another small, performance-orientated car announced for South Africa.
  • Tuck displays his love for the Renault F1 Team and his favourite driver Fernando Alonso. Not! He is also one of the two people in the world whose actually driven a Spider RenaultSport.
  • What is up with Renault?
  • Face lifted Nissan Murano looks like its slashed by a samurai rather than styled on one. Is this Renault’s influence coming through?
  • Fiat. Great cars, crap service – we rate Fiat’s dealer service using the JD Power survey papers.
  • Tuck has a weird fetishes and this week he admits he really wanted a Land Rover Discovery.
  • What is the best Mercedes-Benz? Listen to us debate, you will be surprised…
  • We also talk about the most desirable old Mercs, the 190E Cosworth 2.3 and Tuck’s Alfa 155.
  • The Merc-fest continues and we talk about engine choice and AMG styling packs that cost the price of a second hand Smart car.
  • The brand-dilution that manufacturers seem to encourage by offering sport packs; Audi, Alfa and BMW are not exempt.
  • The practicality of Mercedes Benz’s Smart brand and how a seemingly decent car brand became a sales flop.
  • Student commuters, what cars can you buy for someone going to varsity? Trevor gives his opinions and everyone disagrees.
